§ Mr. Bullasked the Minister of Health whether he can state the number and names of councils which, under the new Food and Drugs Bill, will lose their authority in matters affecting the control of food and drugs in their respective areas?
§ Sir K. WoodI presume that my hon. Friend is referring to the councils of the 18 non-county boroughs, mentioned in the Third Interim Report of the Local Government and Public Health Consolidation Committee. These are food and drugs authorities under the existing law but which could not be such authorities under Clause 64 of the Bill so long as their population does not amount to 20,000.
The names of these councils are:
Banbury. Congleton. Barnstaple. Glossop. Berwick on Grantham. Tweed. Kendal. Boston. Newark on Trent. Bridgwater Newbury. Bury St. Penzance. Edmunds. Tiverton. Carmarthen. Warwick. Clitheroe. Wenlock. The position of 23 other boroughs with a population between 20,000 and 40,000 would depend upon whether a direction were given under the proviso to the Clause that they should continue to be food and drugs authorities.
