HC Deb 25 November 1937 vol 329 c1432W
Mr. Morgan

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies, to what extent sugar plantations in the British West Indies are owned by British interests; what proportion are American-owned; and whether he is taking any particular steps to encourage the investment of more British and Empire capital in these plantations?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

No figures are available; but, so far as my information goes, the number of foreign-owned sugar plantations in the British West Indies is negligible, and in the circumstances I see no occasion to take the action suggested in the last part of the question.
