HC Deb 24 November 1937 vol 329 c1237W
Sir R. Glyn

asked the Postmaster-General what progress has been made with laying underground cables; what mileage has so far been dealt with during the last 12 months; and by what date will the whole scheme be completed?

Major Tryon

On 30th September, 1937, the total underground single-wire mileage was nearly 12¼ million miles as compared with just over 11½ million miles on 30th September, 1936. Further cables will be required year by year so long as the telephone service continues to develop; development is still going on at a rapid pace and it is impossible to foretell a date when saturation point will be reached.
