HL Deb 16 November 1937 vol 107 cc110-2WA
LORD STRICKLAND

asked whether His Majesty's Government will cause a return to be prepared showing the amount that would be due on the last day of this year for arrears of rent payable by the military authorities in Malta under the award of Sir Edgar Harper appointed to adjudicate as to the parti tion of rights over real property between the War Department as representing the English taxpayer and the Civil Government of Malta; and whether it is a fact that the military authorities are refusing to be bound by some portion of the award unfavourable to them and in particular as regards the payment of rent for married quarters dealt with in the Report: and whether the ground on which St. Edward's College stands has ever been paid for by British taxpayers' money, and whether rent can be claimed for buildings thereon not required bona fide for military purposes?

THE PARLIAMENTARY UNDERSECRETARY OF STATE FOR THE COLONIES (THE MARQUESS OF DUFFERIN AND AVA)

I am asking the Governor of Malta whether it is possible to furnish the information asked for by the noble Lord.
