HC Deb 11 November 1937 vol 328 c1855W
Mr. Jenkins

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Board of Education whether the building of new schools, and the reconditioning of existing schools in connection with the raising of the schoolleaving age, is proceeding satisfactorily; and whether he can state the number of loans sanctioned to date in connection therewith?

Mr. Lindsay

My Noble Friend has no reason to be dissatisfied with the rate of progress. The amount of capital expenditure out of loans by local education authorities which has been approved by the Board since the passing of the Education Act, 1936, was £4,500,000 during the period 1st August, 1936, to 31st March, 1937, and 5,300,000 during the period 1st April, 1937, to date.
