HC Deb 11 November 1937 vol 328 cc1894-6W
Mr. Leach

asked the Minister of Transport whether he has observed the heavy and continuing death roll of cyclists and pedestrians caused by motor accidents in which the motorist was under the influence of liquor, and the inadequacy of the penalties imposed in the present state of the law; and will he consider further legislation to enforce heavier penalties?

Mr. Burgin

The Statute already provides on a first conviction for imposition of penalties up to a £5o fine and six months imprisonment as well as 12 months disqualification. This should provide a salutary punishment of the man convicted of the criminal folly of driving a motor vehicle when under the influence of drink.
