HC Deb 11 November 1937 vol 328 cc1870-1W
Mr. McGovern

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that there is a maximum of 40s. per week paid in able-bodied relief by the Glasgow Corporation Public Assistance Committee; and whether he is prepared to get them to abolish this restriction in view of the example shown by the Unemployment Assistance Board, who are paying in many cases 55s. where the applicants preciously received 40s. from the Glasgow Corporation?

Mr. Elliot

I am informed that in connection with the affording of outdoor relief to the able-bodied poor, Glasgow Corporation have a rule that not more than 40s. per week may be granted to an applicant for himself, his wife and his dependent children except with the approval of the Appeals Sub-Committee of the Public Assistance Committee. I am further informed that the Appeals Sub-Committee sanction grants in excess of 40s. per week in all cases where they consider that the circumstances warrant a higher payment. In these circumstances I see no reason to intervene.
