HC Deb 11 November 1937 vol 328 cc1866-7W
Mr. White

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether it is proposed to make an order for increased import duties on milk products, as detailed in Command 5591?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

Following is a copy of the Notice issued by the Board of Trade on 8th November, explaining the circumstances in which it was decided not to give effect for the present to the recommendations of the Import Duties Advisory Committee as set out in Command Paper 5591.

A report from the Import Duties Advisory Committee dated the 3rd June, 1936, recommending increased duties on processed milks is being published by His Majesty's Stationery Office tomorrow as Command 5591. Since the report was received His Majesty's Government, after consultation with United Kingdom manufacturing interests, have discussed with the representatives of the principal foreign supplying countries the question of the imports of processed milks into the United Kingdom. As a result of these discussions arrangements have been made for reducing the exports to this country to a level that should enable United Kingdom manufacturers to secure a satisfactory share of the home market. At the same time the foreign exporters and home manufacturers concerned have concluded agreements governing the marketing of the chief descriptions of processed milk in this country.

In these circumstances it has been decided not to give effect for the present to the recommendations of the Import Duties Advisory Committee, provided that the voluntary arrangements for the limitation of exports to the United Kingdom and the marketing agreements between exporters and manufacturers continue to operate satisfactorily.
