HC Deb 04 November 1937 vol 328 c1138W
Mr. Liddall

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether, in view of the fact that the use and enjoyment by the public of the Soane Museum, in Lincoln's Inn Fields, is very restricted owing to the trust deed, he will obtain legislative power by which the trustees may be permitted to open the museum to the public during the same days and hours as those applicable to the British Museum and the National Gallery?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

Sir John Soane's Museum is a private foundation, and the Government are not prepared to ask Parliament to intervene to regulate its hours of opening. I understand that the private Act regulating this museum does not restrict the days or hours of opening but lays down a minimum which is in fact substantially exceeded.
