§ Mr. Crowderasked the Minister of Transport whether he has any information showing the extent to which local authorities in the principal cities of Great Britain have, during the current year, insisted on underground garages being provided beneath new houses, buildings, blocks of flats, business premises, places of entertainment, and other similar buildings erected in their traffic-congested areas, and the owners or patrons of which are likely to be car-users; and what steps he has taken to encourage the provision of such garages?
§ Mr. BurginThe attention of local authorities has been drawn from time to time to their powers under Section 17 of the Restriction of Ribbon Development Act, 1935. That section enables local authorities in certain circumstances to require the provision of accommodation for loading and unloading vehicles, picking up or setting down passengers, or re-fuelling but does not enable them to insist on the provision of garages as such.
