HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 c947W
Mr. Ridley

asked the Minister of Labour how many persons were registered as unemployed in each of the Special Areas at the most recent date for which the figures are available?

Mr. E. Brown,

pursuant to his reply (OFFICIAL REPORT, 28th October, 1937; col. 270, Vol. 328), supplied the following statement:

The table below shows the numbers of persons, aged 14 years and over, registered as unemployed at 13th September, 1937, at Employment Exchanges at which persons in the Special Areas would normally register:

Durham and Tyneside 101,117
West Cumberland 9,272
South Wales and Monmouthshire 95,425
South-West Scotland 58,171
All Special Areas 263,985
Note.—The figures have been compiled under the revised procedure for counting the unemployed introduced in September, 1937, by which persons subsequently found to be in employment on the day of the count are excluded.
