HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 c943W
Mr. David Adams

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he will state the total number of tankers, other steamers, and sailing vessels, respectively, laid up in the ports of the United Kingdom as at the 31st October, 1937, 30th September, 1937, and 31st October, 1936, respectively?

Mr. R. S. Hudson

Particulars of tonnage laid up in United Kingdom ports on the dates referred to by the hon. Member are not available, but the quarterly returns of laid-up shipping issued by the Chamber of Shipping show that there were laid up in ports of Great Britain and Ireland on the 1st October, 1937, 75 British and foreign vessels, totalling 99,000 tons net, of which one was a tanker and eight were sailing vessels. A year earlier the number of vessels laid up was 175, totalling 403,000 net tons, of which 42 were tankers and six were sailing vessels.
