HC Deb 03 November 1937 vol 328 cc950-1W
Colonel Wedgwood

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether his attention has been drawn to the advocacy by Mr. Pirow of the surrender of some of our African Colonies to Germany; and what steps he has taken to make it clear that under no circumstances will such a policy be supported by the Government of this country?

Marquess of Hartington

I assume that the right hon. Member is referring to a recent speech by Mr. Pirow, in the course of which he is reported in the South African Press to have saidIn the realm of external affairs German South Africans could try to promote closer relationship between Germany and South Africa and between Germany and the British Empire. A close relationship could be established on the basis of complete equality and by a fair and satisfactory settlement of the colonial question. In this way German South Africans could render great service to South Africa without in any way detracting from the achievements of the Third Reich. In these circumstances the second part of the question does not arise.
