HC Deb 02 November 1937 vol 328 c754W
Sir T. Moore

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether his attention has been called to the estimate of the Comissioner for the Special Areas in Scotland, that it is possible to bring a vastly increased area of peat-bog under cultivation; and how much such a policy of reclamation would cost per too acres reclaimed?

Mr. Elliot

I assume that the question has reference to the hope expressed by the Special Areas Commissioner that the peat reclamation experiment which he is assisting the Macaulay Institute for Soil Research to carry out at Woodend Farm, near Carnwath, may make it possible to bring an increased area of land under cultivation. I am informed by the Commissioner that the first stage of the experiment will not be completed until November, 1938, and that it will be some time before the final cost can be estimated.
