§ Mr. Naylorasked the Home Secretary whether he will make inquiries into the case of Vincent Arpeno, a British subject, aged 26, of Darwin Buildings, Walworth, who was convicted in April at the London Sessions to three months imprisonment for receiving stolen coke; and whether, in view of the prisoner's previous good character, as testified by the police, and the fact that no evidence of complicity was produced against him on a plea of guilty, he will consider remitting the remainder of the sentence?
§ Sir J. SimonI am informed that the defendant in this case appeared at Tower Bridge Police Court on 4th March, and on pleading guilty was sentenced to three months imprisonment, and that on 9th April his appeal to Quarter Sessions against sentence was dismissed with costs. I understand that the facts as to the defendant's previous character were fully before the court on both occasions, and I regret that I can find no ground which would justify me in advising any interference with the sentence.
