HC Deb 04 May 1937 vol 323 cc1000-2W
Mr. T. Morris

asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1) whether it is possible to grant Wales a special Coronation coin in the same way as Scotland;

(2) whether he will indicate the considerations which led to the issue of a special Coronation coin for Scotland and to the withholding of such a coin from Wales?

Mr. Chamberlain

The coins to which my hon. Friend refers are not special Coronation coins but the ordinary coinage of the new reign, nor are any coins being issued for use in Scotland alone. It was decided to issue a coin with a special Scottish symbol because there is already a separate Royal Crest for Scotland which can appropriately be used, but there is no corresponding Royal Crest for Wales which could be similarly used.

Mr. E. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, (1) if he is aware of the disappointment that exists amongst the unemployed and ex-service men through the appointment of people in regular employment for the various positions of paid service required on the day of the Coronation; and whether this could be reconsidered;

(2) whether he is aware of the employment of people in Government employment and London County Council employment on and before Coronation Day for the purpose of showing people to their seats, attendants, stewards, etc.; and was this done in consultation with the Minister of Labour?

Mr. R. S. Hudson

(for the First Commissioner of Works): All stewards on the Government stands are giving voluntary services and the question of paid service does not arise in this connection. As regards other services, wherever additional staff has been required, this has been re- cruited through the normal channels laid down for the grades in question.

Mr. E. Smith

asked the Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministry of Health, as representing the First Commissioner of Works, whether he has considered the communication sent to him by the hon. Member for Stoke-on-Trent; and what action he proposes to take?

Mr. R. S. Hudson

(for the First Commissioner of Works): Yes, Sir; but as it has always been the intention to continue the floodlighting on the night of Sunday, 16th May, no further action is necessary.
