HC Deb 25 March 1937 vol 321 cc3081-2W
Mr. Boothby

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether His Majesty's Government is aware of the acute and growing scarcity of flax; and what steps, if any, they propose to take to facilitate the growing of flax in this country?

Dr. Burgin

I am not aware of a scarcity of flax. The Linen Industry Research Association, which is supported by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and the Government of Northern Ireland, are improving the strains of flax seed, and I hope that this work will assist the growing of flax in the United Kingdom.
