HC Deb 16 March 1937 vol 321 cc1880-1W
Wing-Commander Wright

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he is aware that the present shortage of steel is being intensified by the fact that hoarding is being carried on by manufacturing firms on the one hand who are fearful of not being able to get supplies and suppliers on the other hand who anticipate inflated prices; and whether, in view of the damaging effect this will have on our export trade, he will take steps which will have the effect of releasing these frozen stocks and so alleviating the present shortage of material?

Dr. Burgin

I am not aware that either suppliers or users of steel are holding unduly large stocks; in fact my information is that stocks are smaller than usual. The second part of the question does not therefore arise.

Mr. T. Williams

asked the President of the Board of Trade whether he can state the output of pig iron and steel during the year 1932 and each succeeding year in the United States, Germany, Canada, Czechslovakia, Sweden, Russia and Great Britain; and the price per ton in Great Britain for each of the years referred to?

Dr. Burgin

The following tables show the output of pig iron (including ferr-
