HC Deb 11 March 1937 vol 321 c1355W
Mr. Morgan

asked the Minister of Transport whether he is aware of the inconvenience and loss caused to the owners of certain premises situated at the junction of City Road and Old Street, in the City of London, owing to the erection of traffic-control lights at that crossing; and whether, in view of the fact that property in City Road at that junction has become unlettable owing to the removal of loading facilities caused by the lights, he will take steps to consider either whether the lights can be situated elsewhere or whether compensation can be paid for the loss to property owners which has resulted?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

The traffic light signals were erected four years ago at this junction, which was previously controlled by police. The removal of the light signals would not obviate in any way the necessity of control at a junction so congested by traffic.

Mr. Naylor

asked the Minister of Transport whether he will take steps to secure more consideration for the convenience and safety of the large number of pedestrians crossing Ludgate Circus, E.C., where insufficient exposure of the amber light and the dribbling of traffic to the left seriously restricts the time for crossing?

Mr. Hore-Belisha

I will certainly request that the operation of this installation shall be reviewed as soon as experience has been gained of the effect of the signals now being erected at the northern approach to Blackfriars Bridge.
