asked the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is the basis of the double taxation agreement between the United Kingdom and France; and what is the reason for the delay in ratification?

Mr. Chamberlain

The proposed agreement with France is concerned primarily with modifications of the liability of British companies to the French tax on

the hosiery industry and the shirts, collars, underclothing, etc., industry recorded as unemployed (a) in Great Britain and (b) at Leicester, at a date in February of 1937, 1936, 1933 and 1934.

dividends and with the making of arrangements, in accordance with the provisions of Section 17 of the Finance Act, 1930, for relief from double taxation in the case of profits arising through agencies. The terms of the agreement have not yet been settled, but every effort is being made to bring the negotiations to a satisfactory conclusion.
