HC Deb 02 March 1937 vol 321 cc189-90W
Mr. Day

asked the Postmaster-General whether he will state the number of pedestal telephone instruments that are still in hand; and whether it is proposed to instal the new type of hand-microphone instrument for the use of all telephone subscribers without extra charge when the old type are worn out, in order that the best instruments are available for all telephone users?

Major Tryon

The number of pedestal instruments still in use is about 1,400,000. The hon. Member is no doubt aware that the charge for the hand-microphone was reduced on 1st January to the nominal sum of 5s. I am not prepared to make any further reduction at present.
