HC Deb 10 June 1937 vol 324 c1984W
Mr. L. Smith

asked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether, in view of the large number of Irish labourers who come over to find work in this country, he will request the Government of Southern Ireland to consider the possibility of making arrangements for their financial support when they fall out of work until such time as they can return to Southern Ireland?

Marquess of Hartington

As was stated by my right hon. Friend the Minister of Labour on 3rd June, the question of the extent of Irish Free State migration into this country is under examination with a view to ascertaining the facts. As at present advised, my right hon. Friend does not think that the adoption of my hon. Friend's suggestion would be either practicable or desirable.
