Mr. R. Duckworthasked the Home Secretary whether he will state the comparative figures of emigrants from, and immigrants into, Great Britain during the last 12 months for which statistics are available?
§ Captain WallaceI have been asked to reply. During the 12 months ended 31st May, 1937, 30,816 persons were recorded in the passenger returns furnished to the Board of Trade as leaving permanent residence in Great Britain to take up permanent residence in non-European countries, and 46,062 persons were recorded as leaving permanent residence in those countries to take up permanent residence in Great Britain. Residence for a year or more is treated as permanent residence for the purposes of this classification.
