HC Deb 21 January 1937 vol 319 cc359-60W
Mr. T. Williams

asked the Minister of Labour whether he has yet considered the suggestions made by the Birmingham

stationed at the exact point where the distance begins or ends; will he refer to certain cases dismissed by the Highgate magistrates on 4th January, 1937, for similar reasons; and will he take steps to put a stop to such procedure?

Sir J. Simon

No, Sir; I am not aware that any complaint of this nature has been made in respect of the methods adopted by the Metropolitan police, who have explicit instructions that officers engaged in timing vehicles passing through speed controls shall stand exactly at the points where the measured distance begins and ends. I understand that the Highgate cases referred to were cases of exceeding the speed limit in Finsbury Park where the officials who enforce the speed limit are not the police.
