HC Deb 09 February 1937 vol 320 cc231-2W
Mr. Morgan Jones

asked the Under-Secretary of State for India (1) whether the rulers of the native States accept as binding the conventions of the International Labour Office;

(2) to what extent a convention duly ratified by the Government of India is applied by the States?

Mr. Butler

There is no method by which the Indian States can formally accept as binding International Labour Conventions. But when a draft convention has been ratified by India the Government of India bring it to the notice of those States to which its provisions appear to be relevant and are prepared when necessary to use their good offices with the authorities of such States to induce them to apply so far as possible the provisions of the convention within their territories.
