HC Deb 04 February 1937 vol 319 c1786W
Captain P. Macdonald

asked the Minister of Health whether, in connection with the present consideration of Government grants to local authorities, he will cause special attention to be paid to cases where local authorities are in receipt of large sums of money in respect of toll bridges and toll roads; and whether it will be possible so to arrange future grants as to discourage local authorities from wishing to maintain such sources of revenue contrary to the interests of the public as a whole?

Sir K. Wood

Receipts of local authorities in respect of toll bridges and toll roads are not matters of which specific account falls to be taken in the statutory investigation of the Block Grant under the Local Government Act, 1929, at present proceeding. I understand, however, that it is the policy of my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Transport, to encourage local authorities to abolish tolls wherever possible.
