§ Sir G. Foxasked the Minister of Transport how many counties have given effect to the scheme of improvement at junctions on the rural sections of the chief roads by joining them up at right angles; what was the amount of State assistance given to such councils for the purpose; how much of this money has been used; and what can be reckoned as the saving in life if the experience in Oxfordshire at these rural junctions is taken as a basis of computation?
§ Mr. BurginThe answer to the first part of the question is that highway authorities generally are dealing with2188W these improvements in their annual programmes of works and that grants are made from the Road Fund at normal rates. The information asked for in the second and third parts is not readily available and its compilation would involve a great deal of research and exepnditure for which there would not, in my view, be justification. As regards the last part of the question, I do not think there would be any value in a computation which must of necessity involve so many hypothetical factors.
