HC Deb 23 December 1937 vol 330 cc2183-4W
Mr. Kelly

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether he will state the number of clerical officers, general and departmental, and the number of writing assistants employed in the civil service as at 1st April, 1936; and the number of clerical officers, general and departmental, and the number of clerical assistants employed as at 1st October, 1937?

Lieut.-Colonel Colville

Statistical information of this character is obtained annually and is related to 1st April in each year. The numbers as at 1st October, 1937, are therefore, I regret, not available. The numbers of clerical officers and writing assistants employed as at 1st April, 1936, were 50,500 and 9,000 respectively. The corresponding numbers of clerical officers and clerical assistants as at 1st April, 1937, were 54,800 and 10,500 respectively. The figures for clerical officers include higher clerical officers and grades on comparable salaries in the departmental clerical classes.
