Wardlaw-Milneasked the Secretary of State for Dominion Affairs whether he is aware that certificates of naturalisation were granted during the month of April last in Canada to approximately 3,500 aliens; and whether he can give figures showing the number of British and alien immigrants, respectively, entering Canada for the months from May, 1937, to the latest convenient date?
Mr. M. MacDonaldAs regards the first part of the question, I am informed that 2,821 certificates of naturalisation were granted in Canada in April last, and that the total number of persons, including wives and children, naturalised under these certificates was 3,667.
1490WAs regards the second part of the question, figures fully classified according to nationality are not yet available. The numbers of British immigrants from overseas and of other immigrants into Canada in each of the months from May to October, 1937, were as follows:

May, 1937 … 299 1318 June … 294 1312 July … 319 1038 August … 341 1234 September … 399 1236 October … 304 1348 In connection with this table it should be noted that (a) the figures for "other immigrants" include all British subjects who entered Canada otherwise than through the ocean ports; (b) the comparable figures for the year ended 31st March, 1937, were: British immigrants from overseas, 2,264; other immigrants, 9,759; and that the latter figure included 5,113 immigrants from the United States, of whom more than half were of British racial origin and nearly 750 were still British subjects; (c) in addition to the above total of 12,023 immigrants during the year ended 31st March, 1937, more than 5,000 Canadians, all British subjects, returned to Canada.
