HC Deb 16 December 1937 vol 330 c1360W
Mr. E. J. Williams

asked the First Commissioner of Works whether he will inquire into the working conditions at the ordnance factory at Bridgend, where the employés are working 12-hour shifts; and whether he will take steps to stop these excessive hours in order that local unemployed persons can be engaged?

Sir P. Sassoon

The possibility of working three shifts instead of two on this work has been discussed with the contractor, but, owing to necessary intervals for machinery adjustments, meals and week-end repairs, it has been found impossible to provide a full week's work for three shifts. I would add that the early completion of the urgent preliminary work now being carried out by day and night shifts will enable a much larger number of men to be employed.
