HC Deb 02 December 1937 vol 329 c2282W
Mr. G. Griffiths

asked the Secretary of State for the Colonies whether, in view of the action that has been taken in the Windward Islands for the establishment of a minimum wage for agricultural workers, he will encourage similar action in other territories?

Mr. Ormsby-Gore

Legislation has been passed in upwards of 30 Colonial territories, under which the Governor in Council is empowered to fix a minimum wage for any occupation in any district in which he is satisfied that the wages for that occupation are unreasonably low. I am not aware of the total number of cases in which a minimum wage has actually been fixed. I am satisfied that Colonial Governments are fully alive to the importance of the question.
