HC Deb 02 December 1937 vol 329 c2286W
Mr. J. Griffiths

asked the Minister of Labour whether he is aware that there are a number of communities in the eastern portion of the county of Carmarthen in which from 30 per cent. to 60 per cent. of the insured population are unemployed and where, owing to the permanent closing of the coal mines and tinplate works, there are no prospects of those unemployed securing work at their old occupations; and, in view of the fact that the area is outside the scheduled Special Area of South Wales, what steps he proposes to take to deal with the position?

Mr. E. Brown

I am aware of the high rate of unemployment in certain parts of Carmarthenshire. I am informed that discussions are proceeding with a view to the formation of a Site Company under Sections 5 and 6 of the Special Areas (Amendment) Act, 1937, to operate in districts such as Carmarthenshire which are outside the Special Areas.
