HC Deb 09 November 1936 vol 317 cc524-5W
Sir G. FOX

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether statistics are now available as to the extent to which a greater proportion of British barley is being used in the brewing of British beer during the past two years; and whether he is satisfied with the existing arrangements to ensure that the maximum possible proportion is used?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

The Brewers' Society has recently furnished the following statement to the Import Duties Advisory Committee regarding the quantity of British barley purchased in each of the past four years by brewers representing from 95 to 97½ per cent. of the total barrelage brewed:—

As regards the second part of the question, I am satisfied that brewers are observing the voluntary arrangements that they made with the import Duties Advisory Committee respecting their purchases of British barley, as explained in the communication published in the Press on the 15th May last.
