HC Deb 09 November 1936 vol 317 c516W
Mr. LEACH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs what restrictions are being placed by the British authorities in the Sudan on the entry of supporters of the Negus into Abyssinia from the east?

Viscount CRANBORNE

No restrictions are enforced against Abyssinians wishing to proceed to Western Abyssinia except in so far as visas to cross the Sudan are required. Applications for such visas must be made individually and each is considered on its merits with special reference to the reasons for the intended journey, the conditions actually existing in Western Abyssinia and the political and other considerations involved.

Mr. LEACH

asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs the grounds on which the British representatives sought to exclude Abyssinia from League membership?

Viscount CRANBORNE

The representatives of His Majesty's Government in the United Kingdom have at no time sought to exclude Abyssinia from membership of the League. The hon. Member's question does not, therefore, arise.
