HL Deb 24 March 1936 vol 100 c230WA
LORD STRICKLAND

asked His Majesty's Government if they are aware that the Chief Justice of Malta advised another of His Majesty's Judges, after his appointment, to disassociate himself from being a partner in an unlimited partnership owning a newspaper; and that the same newspaper threatened libel actions and has given cause to a libel action; whether the powers provided in the Laws of Organisation and Civil Procedure, and in the (Imperial) Malta Constitution Act, 1932, will be used to support the above advice; if not, whether the Judges of other Colonies will be informed of the implied abrogation of the Colonial Regulations as regards civil servants being interested in trade?

THE EARL OF PLYMOUTH

I am not fully informed as to the facts referred to in the first part of the Question; but, as at present advised, I can see no grounds for intervention by His Majesty's Government.

House adjourned at nine minutes before eight o'clock.
