§ Viscount CRANBORNEThe Grantin-Aid of His Majesty's Treasury to the British Council for 1935–36 formed only a part of the council's income, the remainder being obtained from private sources. The activities of the council during 1935–36 included presentations of sets of English books to libraries abroad, presentations of English books as prizes to foreign students of the English language; arrangements for foreign student-teachers of English to take vacation or other courses at British universities, technical colleges and schools; arrangements for the performance abroad of musical works by English composers, and for tours abroad by English musicians and conductors; lecturing tours of distinguished English speakers in foreign countries; and financial and general support of Anglo-foreign societies abroad.
