HC Deb 09 March 1936 vol 309 cc1818-9W
Mr. DAY

asked the Postmaster-General what would be the approximate loss to the Government by the introduction of penny postage; and whether, for the purpose of benefiting trade and commerce, he is prepared to consider the intrdouction of same?

Major TRYON

If allowance is made for the resulting increase in traffic, the cost of restoring penny postage would be about £6½ million a year. I have the possibility of a return to penny postage constantly in mind; but in view of the sacrifice of revenue involved I regret I am at present unable to hold out any hope of an early restoration.
