§ Mr. MORGAN,asked the Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs whether the British Government now recognises East Hopei, in North China, as autonomous; and whether the Chinese imperial maritime customs are now allowed to function in that area?
§ Mr. EDENThe area in question is part of China and is therefore, in the view of His Majesty's Government, under the sovereignty of the Chinese Central Government. As regards the second part of the question, there has been no recent change in the position, which, as my hon. Friend will be aware, is at present being examined by an official sent by the Japanese Government.
