HC Deb 02 July 1936 vol 314 c623W
Mr. MARKHAM

asked the Lord President of the Council what sums have been spent on scientific research during each of the last five years, exclusive of museums and defence research services?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

I have been asked to reply. Following is the information required:

£
1931–32 1,673,745
1932–33 1,526,471
1933–34 1,426,855
1934–35 1,474,090
1935–36 (estimated) 1,567,211

These figures include the cost of buildings maintained by the Office of Works in connection with research services, but, with the exception of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, do not include the cost of administrative staff. While expenditure incurred in respect of museum services generally has been excluded as requested, the figures given include the cost of the Museum of Practical Geology, which forms an essential part of the Geological Survey of Great Britain, and is included in the research services under the administration of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research.
