HC Deb 11 December 1936 vol 318 cc2200-1W
Mr. T. WILLIAMS

asked the Minister of Agriculture what quantity of beef and veal of all kinds was imported into this country for the year ended 30th November, 1936, giving foreign and Empire imports separately; and what was the estimated consumption of home-produced beef and veal for the same period?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

Information regarding imports in November will not be available until after the middle of December. Imports of beef and veal of all descriptions into the United Kingdom in the twelve months ended 31st October, 1936, amounted to 648,000 tons, of which 144,000 tons were consigned from British countries and 504,000 tons from foreign countries. In addition, the equivalent in beef and veal of fat cattle and calves imported during the same period is estimated at 50,000 tons; the whole of these imports were from British countries. The quantity of home-produced beef and veal available for consumption in the United Kingdom in the year ended 31st May, 1936, is provisionally estimated at about 740,000 tons, but no information is available to enable an estimate to be made for the year ended 31st October or 30th November.
