§ Mr. MAINWARINGasked the Minister of Labour whether, in the determination of scales of allowances to the unemployed, consideration was given to the activities of charitable organisations and, if so, what weight was given to this factor in meeting their needs?

§ Mr. E. BROWNNo, Sir. The scales set out in the first schedule to the Unemployment Assistance Regulations relate to applicants without resources, whether from charitable organisations or otherwise. As regards the relation between the board and charitable organisations in dealing with special or exceptional need I would refer the hon. Member to page 45 of the board's report for 1935 (Cmd. 5177).
