HC Deb 09 April 1936 vol 310 cc2953-4W
Mr. LEONARD

asked the Minister of Agriculture whether he will state, for the years 1934 to 1935, the total production of milk in Great Britain; and the percentage disposed of for purposes of, manufacture?

Mr. ELLIOT

The estimated total production of milk in Great Britain in the two years 1933–34 and 1934–35 was approximately:

Year (June to May). Million gallons.
1933–34 1,550
1934–35 1,570

The foregoing figures represent the total amount of liquid milk estimated to have been available for all purposes other than for feeding to stock, arid are based on the information obtained through the voluntary Census of 1930–31, assuming that the average lactation yield has not changed since that date. The information available is insufficient to enable me to state what percentage of the total production was used for purposes of manufacture. According to information furnished by the Milk Marketing Boards, relating only to the quantity of milk sold under Milk Marketing Schemes in Great Britain in 1933–34 and in 1934–35, the percentage sold for manufacture was 24.7 per cent. in 1933–34 and 32.0 per cent. in 1934–35, this increase being mainly due to sales of milk by farmers who had previously used it or converted it on the farm.
