HC Deb 09 April 1936 vol 310 c2961W
Dr. LEECH

asked the Minister of Labour, in view of the large number of ex-service men who are unemployed, whether His Majesty's Government will consider raising the King's Roll percentage from two and a-half to five which it was originally, and including a clause in all Government contracts that a certain percentage of men engaged on such contracts must, all other things being equal, be ex-service men without pensions?

Mr. E. BROWN

I assume that the hon. Member is referring to disabled ex-service men. The normal basis of enrolment on the King's National Roll is still the employment of disabled ex-service men to the extent of not less than 5 per cent. of total staff, though local committees have discretion to grant membership on a lower basis if the circumstances so warrant. As regards the latter part of the question, under a resolution of Parliament, Government contracts are confined, save in exceptional circumstances, to employers enrolled on the King's National Roll.
