HC Deb 02 April 1936 vol 310 c2160W
Sir G. FOX

asked the Financial Secretary to the Treasury whether the British Treasury is agreeing to defray the extra cost incurred in policing the Free State frontier to stop the smuggling of imported cattle intended ultimately for this country; and why this extra charge should be imposed on the British taxpayer?

Mr. W. S. MORRISON

The answer to the first part of the question is in the affirmative. With regard to the second part, the Customs service is a reserved service under the Government of Ireland Act and the responsibility for the prevention of smuggling therefore rests upon the Imperial Government, which defrays the cost and collects the duties.
