HC Deb 30 May 1935 vol 302 cc1317-8W
Mr. MAGNAY

asked the Home Secretary whether, seeing that all-in wrestling on Sundays for which payment for admission is made is outside the scope of the Sunday Entertainments Act, 1932, he will state what steps are to be taken for enforcing the law or, alternatively, under what statutory provision these exhibitions are now being permitted?

Sir J. GILMOUR

I am not aware of any statutory provisions bearing on the subject, 'apart from those of the Sunday Observance Act, 1780. The enforcement of those provisions has never been regarded as a matter for the police, but it is of course open to any person to sue for penalties under it. I agree that the position is not entirely satisfactory, and I propose to go into it further.
