HC Deb 21 May 1935 vol 302 c949W
Mr. McGOVERN

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland whether he is aware that uniformed members of the Glasgow Police Force of ten enter business premises, and especially licensed premises, offering for sale tickets for football and boxing contests, etc., for the police benevolent fund; and, in view of the objections to this form of pressure, will he call for a report from the Chief Constable as to the advisability of putting a stop to this practice?

Sir G. COLLINS

From inquiries made it is understood that members of the Glasgow Police Force visit business premises for the purposes referred to in the first part of the question, but that they are forbidden by the Chief Constable to enter licensed premises or premises of known bookmakers for such purposes. As regards the last part of the question, the Chief Constable reports that the expediency of discontinuing the practice is a matter which he is bearing in mind.
