HC Deb 08 May 1935 vol 301 cc968-9W
Sir W. SMILES

asked the President of the Board of Trade what grants have been made by the Government to local authorities during the past 10 years for the prevention of coastal erosion?

Dr. BURGIN

Certain local authorities, it is understood, obtained grants for work, which included sea defence, from the Unemployment Grants Committee in connection with schemes for the relief of unemployment. In addition grants have been made from the Road Fund where works of coast defence were required specifically for the protection of a road. I would also refer my hon. and gallant Friend to the answer given by my right hon. Friend, the Minister of Agriculture, to the hon. and gallant Member for New Forest and Christchurch (Major Mills) on the 4th April last, as to action taken by his Department under the Land Drainage Act, 1930.
