Mr. GARDNER

asked the Postmaster-General to what extent since 1920 machines have been substituted for hand clerical labour in the Post Office Money Order Department; and what is the estimated annual saving deriving from the substitution, allowance being made for the purchase and/or renting of machines, maintenance thereof, and material used in connection therewith?

Since 1920, about 40 machines have been introduced in substitution for hand clerical labour, at an estimated net annual saving of about £3,000.

Since 1920, about 200 machines have been introduced in substitution for hand clerical labour, at an estimated annual net saving of about £70,000.
