§ Mr. HUTCHISONasked the Minister of Labour whether his attention has been called to the large number of lascars, Goanese, and other orientals employed in unloading ships in Tilbury Docks; whether such men contribute to any of the insurance schemes; and whether he proposes to take any action in the matter?
§ Lieut.-Colonel MUIRHEADOn certain liners, I understand, oriental seamen assist passengers with their hand baggage and occasionally handle light perishable goods for the ship's stores, but the general cargo, the heavier passenger baggage, and the normal ship's stores, are handled exclusively by dock workers. My right hon. Friend has put in hand certain inquiries on the question of the insurance position of the ship's stewards, as to which I will write to my hon. Friend in due course.
