asked the Secretary of State for Scotland in respect of how many houses in Scotland certificates have been granted approving assistance by way of loan and how many approving assistance by way of grant under the Housing (Rural Workers) Act, 1926, in the quarters ending 30th September and 31st December, 1934, respectively?

The number of houses completed in Scotland during the quarters beginning 1st July and 1st October, 1934, respectively, was as follows:

Quarter beginning 1st July, 1934:

With State assistance 2,543

Quarter beginning 1st October, 1934:

With State assistance 4,161
Without State assistance 1,934
Total 6,095

NOTE.—Of the 1,535 and 1,934 houses completed in each of the above quarters respectively without State—assistance, 97 and 147 houses respectively were of six apartments and over.

asked the Secretary of State for Scotland the total number of houses built in 1934 to replace uninhabitable houses in county areas?

Sir G. COLLINS

The total number of houses built in 1934 under the Housing (Scotland) Act, 1930, to replace uninhabitable houses in the county areas of Scotland was 1,589. The number of houses under construction at 31st December, 1934, was 3,520, and the number approved but not begun was 1,316.

The number of houses erected in Scotland by unassisted private enterprise in each of the last five years was as follows:
